The Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog with a slightly elongated body, short muzzle and large, expressive eyes. Its drooping ears carry longer hair, and its plumed tail rests over its back. In males, the coat around the neck forms a small mane. It is lightly built and agile, often turning its head towards events around it.
It developed as a companion and watchful observer in Tibetan homes and monasteries. Small dogs could quickly spot approaching people and signal their presence. Despite the European name 'spaniel', it does not come from the tradition of dogs used to flush birds. Its history is primarily linked to living closely alongside people in Tibet.
It is intelligent, independent and usually deeply devoted to familiar people. It likes choosing places that offer a comfortable view of its surroundings. With strangers it often keeps its distance initially, making contact at its own pace. With household members it can be affectionate and playful. It readily responds to interesting activities but is not always as enthusiastic about repeating actions that quickly lose their appeal.
