The South Russian Shepherd Dog is large, with a strong but agile body. Long, harsh hair covers the head too, forming a beard and fringe over the eyes. White and pale shades are most familiar. Beneath the abundant coat, long legs and a build suited to fast running make its movement capabilities easy to underestimate.
Its beginnings are associated with dogs imported from Spain alongside sheep to the southern steppes of the former Russian Empire. They were crossed with local herding and sighthound-like dogs. Askania-Nova became an important breeding centre in the late nineteenth century, establishing dogs able both to work livestock and independently protect flocks over large areas.
It forms strong attachments but need not welcome strangers equally. It closely watches familiar boundaries and can respond firmly to a perceived threat. Independence means it does not always wait for guidance before acting. Calm behaviour in everyday surroundings can quickly give way to an intense, watchful response.
