The Serbian Tricolour Hound is a strong, medium-sized dog with short hair. Red, black and white markings clearly distinguish it from the black-and-tan Serbian Hound. It has drooping ears, an elongated head and a body suited to free movement. Its appearance emphasises capability without excessive weight.
It comes from the same Balkan tracking-dog tradition as other local hounds. In 1946, tricoloured dogs were judged to merit a separate breed and received an initial standard. They were presented more widely at a Belgrade show in 1950. FCI accepted the breed in 1961, initially as the Yugoslavian Tricolour Hound.
It is lively, affectionate towards familiar people and persistent. Once engaged by a trail it can remain interested despite changing surroundings. Attachment to its handler combines with initiative during searches.
