The Serbian Hound has a strong, slightly elongated body, drooping ears and short hair. A black saddle- or mantle-like marking covers its red background. The head is fairly long, with gentle dark eyes. It is capable and enduring, without the heaviness typical of large mastiff-type dogs.
It belongs to the tracking-dog family long present in the Balkans. For much of the 20th century it was called the Balkan Hound. An initial standard appeared in 1924, and FCI accepted the breed in 1940. In 1996 it was renamed the Serbian Hound, identifying the country where the population was particularly numerous and registered.
It is lively, attached to familiar people and persistent. It can be affectionate with people, while outdoors much attention goes to scent. An interesting trail may hold its concentration for a long time. During pursuit it gives a carrying voice, allowing hunters to follow its position.
