The Schillerstövare is a slender, long-legged dog with short hair. A large black saddle stands out against a red background. It has drooping ears, an elongated head and a capable, muscular build. Compared with heavier hounds it looks light, with proportions suited to fast travel over extensive ground.
The name commemorates Per Schiller, who exhibited the siblings Tamburini and Ralla I at the first Swedish dog show in 1886. Their lines were important in the breed’s later development. Breeding also used Swiss and British hounds, including Harriers. The Swedish Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1907. Hare and fox hunting became its traditional speciality.
The Schillerstövare is lively, attentive and quick to react. It usually works alone, independently interpreting scent and choosing a direction. It can maintain its pace for a long time, voicing the progress of a chase.
