The Russian-European Laika is a medium-sized dog with an almost square outline, upright ears and a tail curled over the back. A black-and-white coat has dense underfur and harsher outer hair for weather protection. A wedge-shaped head and muscular legs suit sustained forest travel and rapid reactions over difficult ground.
It descends from local hunting dogs of northern and central European Russia. In 1947 several related populations, including those around Arkhangelsk, Komi and Karelia, were combined into one breed. A standard was approved in 1952. Breeding emphasised hunting versatility: finding varied game and barking to indicate its location.
It is attentive, energetic and inclined to investigate independently. A new scent or movement may absorb its attention for a long time. It cooperates with a handler while retaining initiative rather than seeking constant instructions. Usually affectionate with familiar people, it can be more reserved with strangers. Determination and strong interest in animals are particularly visible outdoors.
