The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is large and powerful with abundant white hair. Grey, fawn or yellowish markings may occur on the head and body. It has small drop ears, a long bushy tail and characteristic double dewclaws on the hind legs. Its calm appearance does not fully reflect its agility over mountain terrain.
For centuries it accompanied Pyrenean flocks, protecting them from predators; it also guarded homes and castles. In the seventeenth century it gained favour at Louis XIV's court. Modern breeding was organised in the early twentieth century, and an official standard was registered in France in 1923. Independent livestock protection over extensive pastures nevertheless remains central to its history.
In familiar surroundings it may be patient and gentle with those close to it. It observes nearby events and often keeps a clear distance from strangers. It does not constantly await commands: it can decide for itself that a situation needs attention. Vigilance may involve barking and monitoring approaching people.
