The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Posavac Hound has a strong, slightly elongated body and short hair in red or wheaten shades. White markings occur on the muzzle, chest and legs among other places. It has drop ears and a gentle expression. Its build remains capable and harmonious without excessive heaviness.
It originates in Croatia's Sava Valley, which gives the breed its name. Similar local dogs appear in old depictions and descriptions, including Petar Bakic's 1719 manuscript. These documents show a long regional breeding tradition without establishing every origin detail. The FCI published the first standard in 1955. The dogs were developed for tracking in varied terrain.
It is attached to its owner and engages relatively readily in shared work. Its temperament may be lively but should not be nervous. When searching it can concentrate on scent for a long time, moving methodically. A clear, melodious voice allows its handler to assess its location even when vegetation hides it.
