The Portuguese Water Dog has a strong, balanced body and an abundant coat that may be wavy or curly. Black, brown and white are common, including combinations of these colours. It has a broad head, hanging ears and a strong tail. The traditional trim with shorter hair on the rear of the body is one way of presenting the same breed.
It formerly helped fishers along the Portuguese coast, recovering objects from the water, retrieving broken lines and carrying things between boats and shore. Swimming ability and cooperation were part of everyday work at sea. Changes in fishing methods reduced these duties, with the Algarve remaining an important stronghold. Breeding was later sustained beyond fishing communities too.
It is generally lively, quick to learn and deeply involved in shared activities. It readily takes on new tasks but may invent occupations of its own when something catches its attention. Emotional expression can be direct, and it enjoys using its mouth to grasp and carry objects. It seeks contact with familiar people, often expressing enthusiasm through readiness for another game.
