The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is easily recognised by its curly topknot and long, richly haired ears. It has a strong body and curly brown or brown-roan hair. Muzzle hair is much shorter, clearly separating it from the full topknot. It is a distinctive medium-sized dog suited to wet terrain.
It originates around Pont-Audemer in Normandy. It developed as a regional hunting dog seeking birds in marshes and other wetlands. Work involved pointing located game and retrieving from water and vegetation. Despite the spaniel name it belongs among French continental pointing dogs, so its role differed from British flushing spaniels.
It is usually gentle with familiar people and cooperative. In the field it quickly engages in scenting, searching and finding objects. It can work persistently while retaining interest in its handler. At home it may be an affectionate, sociable companion, but hunting curiosity does not disappear outside hunts.
