The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Pomeranian has a short body, small upright ears and a pointed muzzle. An abundant coat with dense underfur forms a distinct ruff, and the fluffy tail lies over the back. Its eyes are dark and alert. Colours range from white and cream to red, black and particolour. Movement is quick and springy.
In the German Spitz classification, it is the smallest variety, descended from European farm dogs. Pomeranian refers to Pomerania. Earlier dogs were larger and chiefly served as alert companions around homes and farms. Later breeding, also developed in Britain, increasingly favoured small size and an impressive coat, establishing today’s popular companion type.
Pomeranians are generally lively, curious and highly alert to their surroundings. They quickly notice strangers or unusual sounds and often announce them by barking. They enjoy play, learn simple tasks and seek contact with family members. They can also express their preferences firmly. Their considerable confidence often shows when meeting other dogs and exploring new places.
