The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is a large white dog with a strong build, dark eyes and drop ears. Dense hair is longer on the neck, body and tail and shorter on the head and fronts of legs. A broad chest and powerful limbs give a massive appearance, yet it moves efficiently and freely on uneven terrain.
It developed in Podhale from local dogs accompanying sheep. Their chief task was predator protection, so they worked differently from smaller dogs actively driving flocks. Planned breeding was organised between the wars, and the first standard followed a Zakopane dog review in 1937. Surviving working dogs supported postwar restoration.
It usually stays calm in familiar surroundings while closely watching movement around home and family. It often observes strangers from a distance before allowing them nearer. It forms strong bonds and can be very gentle with familiar people. It can decide independently and investigate anything arousing vigilance without awaiting human guidance.
