The Polish Hunting Dog is a strong, agile dog with a short coat, elongated head and drooping ears. Its outline is lighter than that of the Polish Ogar Hound, with which it is sometimes confused. Long legs and a well-muscled body allow free movement through woods and mountains. It has an attentive expression and appears enduring and determined in motion.
It comes from the Polish tradition of scent hounds used to locate and give voice on game. A lighter type survived, among other places, in the difficult terrain of the Subcarpathian region. Józef Pawłusiewicz played a major role in its breeding, working with these dogs and drawing up their first standard. Through this work the local population gradually became organised as a distinct breed.
The Polish Hunting Dog can be gentle and strongly attached to those close to it. It often first assesses new people with reserve, and changes in the surroundings quickly attract its attention. Scent can absorb it completely while exploring; it then works persistently and with considerable initiative. It is quick to learn and attentive to its handler, although an interesting trail may become its most important concern. At home it often reveals a calmer side of its temperament.
