The Northern Inuit Dog is a large, capable dog with erect ears, an elongated muzzle and dense hair. Its colours, facial mask and bushy tail may recall a wolf. Its body remains proportionate and movement free. The population includes pale and dark dogs with varying head contrasts.
It originated in Britain in the late twentieth century. Breeding combined northern dogs, including Huskies and Malamutes, with German Shepherds and other selected dogs. The aim was a domestic companion with a wolf-like appearance. The name belongs to that project and does not prove direct descent from a traditional Inuit dog breed.
It is usually described as friendly, curious and open to contact. It can nevertheless act independently and quickly become interested in fleeing small animals. In training it may be less focused on repeating commands than a German Shepherd. Some readily howl while others bark more; vocal style visibly reflects differences within the population.
