Neapolitan Mastiff — size comparison — facts and sources

The Neapolitan Mastiff has a massive head, broad body and loose skin forming pronounced folds. Short hair reveals its substantial build, large feet and powerful neck with a full dewlap. The outline is heavy and somewhat elongated. Movement is characteristically unhurried, and dark, attentive eyes emphasise its serious expression.

It descends from large guardians preserved on farms around Naples and Vesuvius in southern Italy. They are traditionally associated with ancient Roman mastiffs, although an uninterrupted breeding line over centuries cannot be reconstructed. Modern breeding began after the Second World War. From 1947, enthusiasts worked to establish the local dogs’ type and gain formal recognition.

Mastiffs are usually calm, loyal to familiar people and highly attentive around the home. They may observe without apparent haste while clearly distinguishing family from strangers. They do not constantly seek games or further commands. Affection often appears as simply staying nearby. They can respond quickly and firmly if something causes concern.
