The short-eared brushtail possum has dense grey fur, rounded ears and a long, hairy tail. The terminal tail section has a bare underside. Older sources predate later taxonomic splits, so not all historical data should be assigned directly to the current species concept.
It leads a mainly solitary life, although the areas used by different individuals may overlap. It uses calls and scent marks in contact with neighbours. Most daytime rest takes place in sheltered retreats, including tree hollows. It emerges to feed at night, using trees, shrubs and the surroundings of fallen trunks. It eats leaves and other plant food.
