Kangal Shepherd Dog — size comparison — facts and sources

The Kangal is tall and powerful, with a strong body, broad head and dark mask. A fawn coat has dense underfur, with hair length varying seasonally. Ears hang beside the head, while the tail rises and curls when alert. Despite its size it can move with a quiet, even stride and accelerate quickly.

The breed is linked to Turkish pastoral life, especially Sivas and Kangal. Its main task was protecting sheep from predators. Dogs stayed with livestock and responded to threats, often without direct instructions. Distant ancestry remains unresolved, while continuity of use in local pastoral communities is well known.

Kangals usually remain composed while watching their area closely. They may be affectionate and calm with familiar people and much more reserved with strangers. They assess situations independently rather than always awaiting a response. Apparent inactivity often means observation; intervention can be decisive when needed.
