The Italian Greyhound is a small, short-haired sighthound with long legs and a fine head. It has a deep chest, a tucked-up abdomen and a gently arched back. A thin tail and small folded ears emphasise its lightness. Movement is springy, and fast running reveals the freedom and agility typical of sighthounds.
Small sighthounds have long been known around the Mediterranean. They held a particular place in Renaissance Italian culture, accompanying wealthy people and appearing in paintings. Such images document their former popularity without establishing the modern breed’s complete ancestry. Later breeding preserved the fine build and close relationship with people, distinguishing it from larger dogs chiefly used for hunting.
Italian Greyhounds generally seek close contact with familiar people, readily cuddling and resting beside their owner. They can also be lively, keen on chasing games and very curious. Sensitive to sudden changes and abrupt behaviour, they may initially watch a new situation. A fast-moving object can immediately encourage pursuit.
