The Istrian Wire-haired Hound has a strong, slightly elongated body and pale hair with orange markings. Harsh hair forms a small beard and eyebrows, giving the head a serious look. Drop ears are less densely haired. It differs from its short-haired relative both in coat and a more robust overall impression.
It comes from the eastern Adriatic hound tradition. Wire-haired dogs also developed in colder mountain areas where a denser coat was useful. Descriptions of local hounds occur in old documents, including Bishop Petar Bakic's 1719 manuscript. The first FCI standard appeared in 1955. Today's breed is separate from the Istrian Short-haired Hound.
Despite its stern expression it is described as gentle, balanced and devoted to people. On a trail it shows persistence and initiative. It can work difficult stony terrain, maintaining scent focus despite changing conditions. Its voice is distinctive and sometimes deep, and handler contact also relies on communication at a distance.
