The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Istrian Short-haired Hound has a slender, capable build and short white hair with orange markings. Drop ears lie against an elongated head, and dark eyes give a gentle expression. Its structure allows free movement over stony ground. It is not heavy despite good musculature and endurance.
It descends from hounds of the eastern Adriatic, especially Istria. Old paintings and descriptions document similar white-and-patched dogs there without giving a complete history of the modern breed. The first FCI standard appeared in 1955. Selection preserved a dog useful on rocky karst terrain, where finding scent requires precision.
It is lively and gentle with familiar people but may initially watch strangers cautiously. It readily learns hunting tasks and remains attentive to its handler, yet can work independently in the field. A strong, melodious voice allows its position to be tracked when scent-following takes it out of sight among rocks or vegetation.
