The Madagascar hissing cockroach feeds mainly at night among litter and decaying wood. It eats primarily dead plant material, including fallen fruit, helping break it down. It avoids light and therefore usually stays hidden by day.
It produces hisses by rapidly expelling air through abdominal spiracles. Signals occur in different situations: danger, courtship and male competition. Sound therefore also matters in interactions between individuals.
Adult males occupy small territories. In contests they push one another and use raised projections on the pronotum. These projections, rather than the spiracles responsible for hissing, are more developed in males.
