The Icelandic Sheepdog is a small, powerful dog with erect ears and a tail curled over its back. It occurs in shorter- and longer-haired varieties, both with dense undercoat. Colouring varies, often with white markings. An alert gaze, mobile ears and slightly open mouth give it a cheerful appearance, while its build suits uneven ground.
Its ancestors arrived in Iceland with the first Norse settlers. They became helpers in daily farm work, particularly gathering scattered livestock. They adapted their working style to local terrain and extensive grazing. Long isolation helped preserve the distinct type now recognised as Iceland's native dog breed.
It usually readily shows interest in people and joins shared activities. It quickly notices movement, new sounds and guests' arrivals, often responding by barking. Its energy appears in agility, readiness to play and continual checking of nearby events.
