Standardbred — size comparison — facts and sources

The Standardbred has a strong, somewhat elongated body, broad chest and powerful hindquarters. Its build is usually more substantial than a Thoroughbred’s. Strong limbs and efficient movement meet the demands of fast harness work.

The breed developed in the United States for trotting and pacing races. Its name comes from a historical time standard over a set distance required for registration. Lines specialising in one of the two racing gaits gradually became established.

Standardbreds are generally persistent, accustomed to regular work and attentive to their driver’s signals. During races they must sustain a fast rhythm without breaking into a gallop. Off the track they are used for leisure, trekking and driving. Ridden work introduces new demands for balance, rider aids and gait repertoire.
