The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Polish Konik is small and stocky with a fairly large head and strong, small hooves. Its mouse-grey coat is lighter on the body, with a dark stripe along the back. The mane and tail are abundant, and stripes may occur on the legs.
Modern breeding developed in the twentieth century from local horses, including those around Biłgoraj. Tadeusz Vetulani named the breed and began a reserve programme linked to a hypothesis of recreating the tarpan. Similar appearance does not, however, establish simple, direct descent from the extinct wild horse.
Koniks are usually independent, alert and comfortable in groups. They are used in light driving, leisure riding and conservation grazing. Their feeding helps maintain open areas, while stable and reserve breeding preserve different forms of contact with people.
