The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Icelandic horse is small but strongly built, with a deep body, strong bone and an abundant mane. It grows a dense winter coat. Many colours occur, and individual appearance varies more than the idea of a single small northern horse type might suggest.
It descends from horses brought to Iceland during the island’s settlement. Long isolation shaped a distinct population whose international breeding is coordinated by FEIF. Its principal working distinction is additional gaits: tölt and, in some horses, flying pace.
Icelandic horses are generally energetic, enduring and willing to move forward. Tölt is a four-beat gait providing a smooth ride, while racing pace allows high speed over a short distance. The breed is used in trekking, leisure riding and specialist competitions assessing gait quality and speed.
