The Hucul horse has a strong, compact body, a powerful back and short, sturdy legs. It is small but well muscled. An abundant mane and tail and an often-visible dorsal stripe emphasise its native mountain type.
It originates in the Hutsul region of the Eastern Carpathians. It served farms, transport and the military as a riding, draught and pack horse. Regular breeding records developed after the stud at Łuczyna was established in 1856. Today conservation breeding maintains its characteristic build.
The Hucul is usually quick to learn, persistent and independent. On uneven ground it carefully chooses foot placements and maintains balance on narrow paths. It is valued in mountain trekking, driving, therapeutic riding and terrain trials involving natural obstacles and agility.
