The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The KWPN horse usually has a tall, athletic outline, well-developed hindquarters and free movement. Exact build depends on breeding direction: jumpers, dressage horses and harness horses favour different qualities.
Dutch breeding developed from regional farm horses, including Groningen and Gelderland types. Agricultural mechanisation changed demand and increasingly directed selection towards sport. KWPN maintains four directions: jumping, dressage, harness and Gelders, the latter closest to the older versatile type.
The shared goal is an athletic, cooperative horse capable of systematic work. Sport lines are often energetic and quick to respond to aids. Selection considers gait or jump quality alongside ease of use. KWPN therefore identifies a breeding background within which different specialisations develop.
