Belgian Draft — size comparison — facts and sources

The Belgian Draft has a short, very broad body, a deep chest and heavily muscled shoulders and hindquarters. Strong legs are relatively short for its body size. In the American population, chestnut or red roan with a pale mane and tail is particularly common.

The breed descends from the Belgian Brabant type developed for heavy work. Horses were also exported to North America, where further selection gave the population a distinctive appearance. Its history remains closely linked to transport and agriculture.

It is usually calm, patient and ready for sustained effort. The ability to maintain a steady pace and cooperate in pairs or larger teams is valued. Belgian Drafts now appear in displays, driving, leisure work and forestry, retaining the practical character of a heavy working horse.
