The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Hokkaido is a powerful Japanese spitz with dense hair, small erect ears and a tail curled over its back. It has a stocky, athletic body and strong legs. Several colours occur, and abundant undercoat protects the body well. Its build suits the cold region where it developed.
It is associated with the Ainu people of Hokkaido and is therefore also called Ainu Ken. It hunted bears and other animals in demanding, often snow-covered terrain. In 1937 it received Japanese natural-monument status and a name referring to the island. Earlier origins are linked to dogs arriving from Honshu, although those ancient movements remain uncertain in detail.
It is hardy, alert and usually highly devoted to familiar people. It carefully assesses its surroundings and can choose its own response. It may be reserved in new situations, and game interest can be very strong. It often maintains close household contact without showing every stranger equal trust.
