The Hamiltonstövare has a strong, long-legged body and short tricolour hair. A black saddle combines with reddish-brown areas and white on the muzzle, chest and legs. Drop ears frame an elongated head. It is a capable, proportionate dog with endurance in woodland and open terrain.
It developed in Sweden from several continental and British hound lines. Important ancestors include Pang and Stella, shown by Count Adolf Patrik Hamilton in 1886. In 1921 the breed received a name honouring this breeder and founder of the Swedish kennel club. It was bred mainly for independent hunting of hares and foxes.
It is friendly and generally balanced in direct contact. When searching it becomes persistent and independent, interpreting scent and choosing direction itself. A clear voice allows its handler to track its position from afar. It can work a trail for a long time without other dogs, distinguishing its method from large-pack hunting.
