The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Gordon Setter has a long, glossy black coat with distinct reddish-brown tan markings on the muzzle, chest and legs. Longer hair clothes the hanging ears, underside and tail. More substantially built than the other British setters, it should still move freely and efficiently. A large head and dark eyes create a calm, attentive expression.
Its development is linked to breeding at Gordon Castle in Scotland. Dogs were selected to find birds and indicate them to hunters by stopping in a characteristic pointing stance. A capable nose, endurance and contact with the handler mattered in this work. The name commemorates the breeding establishment that strongly influenced this black-and-tan setter’s type.
Gordons are generally affectionate with familiar people, often showing attachment by accompanying the family. Outdoors they become energetic and strongly interested in scents. They can take their own initiative while responding attentively to familiar signals. They may be more reserved with strangers than within the family and often need a moment before making relaxed contact.
