The Gascon Saintongeois is an elegant, powerful hound with long ears and short hair. Black patches and smaller markings cover a white background, with tan above the eyes and on the cheeks. The breed includes the larger Grand and smaller Petit types. Both retain an elongated head, deep chest and proportions suited to sustained running.
In the mid-19th century, Count Joseph de Carayon-Latour crossed the last Saintonge hounds with Bleu de Gascogne dogs. He intended to save a declining population, but the resulting type received its own name. A century later, southwestern French hunters began selecting smaller dogs, establishing the Petit variety, chiefly for hare hunting.
The Gascon Saintongeois is generally calm and affectionate with people. It readily joins other dogs and works comfortably in a group. Scenting, wide-ranging searches and a carrying voice are prominent working traits.
