The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Finnish Hound has a strong, slightly elongated body, long legs and drooping ears. Its short coat is tricoloured: black and reddish-brown areas accompany white markings. Its build suggests an ability to sustain steady, energetic movement. Without the heavy folds or exceptionally long ears of some hounds, it has a straightforward working appearance.
The breed developed from local Finnish dogs and hounds imported from elsewhere in Europe. Organised development gained importance after the Finnish kennel organisation was established in 1889. Regional breeders’ associations helped establish a dog suited to hunting in Finnish forests. The first breed standard was drawn up in 1932.
Around people it is usually calm and friendly. In the field it readily moves away to investigate scents independently, without constant direction. It works energetically, and its voice reveals its activity even when trees hide it from view.
