Dire wolf — size comparison — facts and sources

The dire wolf was an extinct canid with a strong skull and heavier build than many living wolves. Numerous remains have been found in La Brea deposits.

It was formerly called Canis dirus. Genetic studies revealed a deep separation from the modern grey-wolf lineage, supporting the name Aenocyon. La Brea Tar Pits stresses that genetically modifying modern wolves does not mean restoring this extinct species.
