The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The East Siberian Laika is a sturdy spitz with erect ears and a dense coat. Its bushy tail curls over or close to its back. Its build is distinctly practical: strong legs, a solid body and thick coat help it move efficiently through demanding surroundings. Coat colours include black and tan, black, white and piebald.
It descends from hunting dogs of the taiga and the mountains of central and eastern Siberia. Various local populations contributed to the breed, including Tungus and Amur dogs. For a long time, selection favoured usefulness in a particular region rather than a single shared appearance. Organised breeding brought these traditions together in a breed that retains versatile hunting abilities.
The Laika readily explores, attending to scents as well as sounds and movement. Finding an animal can sharply change its previously calmer behaviour. It uses its voice and is willing to work far from direct human help. Its independence is particularly apparent when it must choose its own route and approach.
