The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Dutch Shepherd is most readily recognised by its brindled coat. It has a strong, slightly elongated outline, erect ears and an attentive expression. Shorthaired, longhaired and rough-haired varieties differ in coat appearance but retain similar proportions. It is agile and enduring, moving freely without excessive heaviness.
It was a versatile helper on Dutch farms. It herded sheep, guarded crop boundaries, drove cows for milking and pulled small milk carts. Agricultural mechanisation reduced its old duties, and the breed also entered service work and sports. Varied work helped preserve both independence and readiness for close human cooperation.
The Dutch Shepherd is alert, quick to learn and very persistent. It readily accepts tasks but can find its own way to perform them. It closely watches movement and its handler's signals, quickly adapting responses to the situation. It forms a strong family bond and may initially be cautious with novelty. Its engagement often involves sustained concentration, so simple repetition does not always interest it as much as purposeful action.
