The Drentsche Patrijshond has a strong, slightly elongated body and a white-and-brown coat. Longer hair adorns the ears, backs of the legs and tail, and its gentle expression recalls some spaniels. It is, however, a pointing dog: in the field it indicates located game by stopping in a characteristic stance. Its moderate build suits efficient movement through fields and vegetation.
The breed developed in the Dutch province of Drenthe from old bird-hunting dogs. The region preserved its local type while other parts of the country more readily introduced foreign breeds. Official recognition in the Netherlands came in 1943, and the club was founded five years later. The dog was valued for versatility, helping to find and retrieve quarry as well as search for it.
It is usually attached to its owner, sensitive and cooperative. While searching it maintains contact with people and may look back at its handler while waiting beside located game. An interesting scent prompts characteristic tail movements, sometimes in circles. It may initially observe strangers with reserve while remaining affectionate and relaxed with its family.
