Wonambi — size comparison — facts and sources

Wonambi naracoortensis was a large Australian snake belonging to the extinct family Madtsoiidae. Its remains occur in Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits of southern Australia, including Naracoorte’s caves. Cranial, jaw and vertebral bones permit a more detailed anatomical reconstruction than is possible for snakes represented only by isolated vertebrae.

It was not simply an ancient species of modern python. Contacts between its cranial bones imply different jaw movements, and studies of its inner ear suggest comparatively generalist ecology. The board uses an approximate upper length reference of 5 m. Its head remains proportionately small; scale pattern and colours are artistic interpretations.
