The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
Diplodocus was a huge, four-legged herbivore of Late Jurassic North America. A small head topped its long neck, and an even more elongated tail tapered like a whip. Its teeth formed comb-like rows. Remains come from the Morrison Formation, alongside Allosaurus, Stegosaurus and other sauropods.
The long neck reached vegetation without constantly moving the heavy body. Available feeding heights depended on joint movement and supporting tissues. Vertebral anatomy indicates the importance of strong ligaments that may have reduced muscular effort while holding the head ahead of the body.
A Diplodocus carnegii skeleton provided the basis for many museum casts, including London’s Dippy. Earlier mounts placed the tail on the ground. Later research led to it being raised in keeping with reconstructed anatomy and balance.
