The Danish-Swedish Farmdog is a small, sturdy dog with a short coat and white body bearing coloured patches. It has a fairly broad head, mobile ears and an attentive expression. Its compact build allows quick, free movement. It may resemble a small terrier, although in canine classification it belongs to the Pinscher type.
For many years it was found on farms in Denmark and southern Sweden. Its varied duties included catching rodents, announcing strangers and accompanying the family. It was valued as a practical, versatile helper living closely alongside people. Modern breeding was organised jointly by the two countries, which recognised the breed under its present name in 1987.
It is usually lively and sociable, readily joining household members' daily activities. It quickly notices new objects, movement and sounds and likes investigating their source. It can learn efficiently and respond to play with great enthusiasm. Within its family it can be affectionate and seek closeness, while the arrival of an unfamiliar person may initially make it alert. Small animals still often arouse its strong interest.
