The barreleye uses tubular eyes whose lenses are visible inside the head covering. The eyes can rotate forwards while taking food. Dark depressions above the mouth belong to the olfactory organ, rather than a second pair of eyes.

Early descriptions based on damaged specimens did not fully show the living animal’s appearance. Observations of live fish revealed that the eyes can change viewing direction rather than remaining permanently directed upwards.
