The Cimarrón Uruguayo is a powerful, athletic dog with a broad head and short hair. Brindle is common, but fawn also occurs. Its legs are strong and its body muscular and capable. Natural ears hang beside the head, and the long tail tapers gradually.
It descends from dogs brought to Uruguay by Spanish and Portuguese colonists. Some lived for generations beyond direct human control. Dogs useful with cattle and for farm protection were later selected from this population. The precise contributions of particular old breeds remain uncertain.
It is usually composed, confident and strongly bonded to familiar people. It watches nearby carefully and can act quickly when something attracts attention. In shared activities it shows learning ability and persistence. It need not greet every newcomer enthusiastically, often first assessing the situation. Calm family behaviour may become firmness when guarding familiar ground.
