Sphynx — size comparison — facts and sources

The Sphynx has a very sparse coat, leaving muscles and skin folds clearly visible. Large ears, wide eyes and a rounded belly create an unusual appearance. Fine down may feel like suede, with short hair on the nose, ears, feet or tail. Skin retains the colours and patterns of the coat.

Modern breeding began in Canada, where a hairless kitten named Prune was born in 1966. Later programmes also used independently occurring hairless cats from Toronto and Minnesota. Crosses with other cats, including Devon Rexes, helped establish the population. The exotic name does not imply Egyptian origins.

Sphynxes are usually sociable, curious and playful. They explore objects with their paws, climb and take an active interest in daily activities. Many seek warm resting places under blankets or beside a person. Their interest in people often leads them to initiate contact repeatedly.
