Persian — size comparison — facts and sources

The Persian has a stocky body, short strong legs and a round head with small ears. Its long, very dense coat forms a full ruff and a bushy tail. Large eyes and a shortened muzzle create its characteristic expression. Colours include solids, tabbies, silver and multicoloured patterns.

The name recalls long-haired cats historically brought from Persia, but European breeders largely shaped the modern breed. Persians appeared at early British cat shows in the nineteenth century. Selection favoured rounder heads, shorter noses and fuller coats. Older depictions show much less shortened muzzles than those of many cats today.

Persians are usually quiet and gentle and enjoy resting in calm surroundings. Affection often takes the form of staying nearby and subtly seeking contact. They can become lively during short games, particularly when something moves slowly within reach. Many favour a few observation spots over constant exploration.
