Burmese — size comparison — facts and sources

The Burmese has a compact, strongly muscled body and a short, silky coat. It is heavier than its small outline may suggest. A rounded head, widely set eyes and a smooth coat give it a soft appearance. Traditional sable colouring is a deep, warm brown, paired with golden eyes.

Modern breeding developed in the United States from Wong Mau, a female imported in 1930. Selection among her descendants and further matings established the characteristic type. European and American breeding later followed somewhat different paths, so registries differ in head descriptions and accepted colours.

Burmese cats are generally people-oriented, curious and keen on shared play. They often follow family members, investigate their activities and actively seek attention. Interest in movement and unfamiliar objects commonly continues into adulthood. Affection often takes the form of close contact, including resting on a lap or beside a person.
