Birman — size comparison — facts and sources

The Birman has a strong, elongated body and a silky, semi-long coat. Blue eyes and darker ears, face and tail are complemented by white feet. The front gloves and the white points extending up the back of the hind feet are defining features. The coat has less undercoat than that of many northern long-haired cats.

The traditional name Sacred Cat of Burma recalls legends of Asian temples, but documented modern breeding developed in France. Selection established a pale body, darker points and symmetrical white foot markings. Despite similar-sounding names, the Birman and Burmese have distinct breed histories.

Birmans are generally sociable and gentle and interested in household activities. They stay near their people, watch their movements and join games. Many communicate more quietly than Siamese cats, with soft meows. They can rest calmly among people while showing curiosity and dexterity during short games.
