The Cão de Gado Transmontano is a very large dog with a strong, relatively long-legged build. Its dense coat is often parti-coloured, and a broad head and drooping ears give it a calm expression. Long limbs allow efficient movement over steep pastures. Its powerful body is less low and stocky than that of some other mastiffs.
The breed developed in Portugal's Trás-os-Montes uplands. Local dogs' history is linked to migrating flocks and protection against wolves. On inaccessible slopes they chiefly accompanied sheep and goats, often in groups of several guardians. Selection established dogs able to move over steep ground and remain among livestock for long periods without constant shepherd direction.
The Transmontano usually remains calm and does not immediately approach strangers. It watches attentively and may allow closer contact after accepting a situation. With its people it can be gentle and sensitive to treatment. It nevertheless remains independent, noticing changes, checking the area and deciding when to raise the alarm. Its composure is particularly visible during long waits when it seems to rest but continues monitoring its surroundings.
