The Brittany is a small pointing dog with a short, compact body and light, energetic movement. Moderately long hanging ears and light leg feathering shape its outline. White combines with coloured patches and ticking. Some are naturally short-tailed, others long-tailed. Despite the name Brittany Spaniel, it belongs to pointing dogs that stop to indicate game.
It developed in central Brittany from local hunting dogs. Planned selection and mating began standardising the type in the early twentieth century. A draft standard was prepared in Nantes in 1907 and adopted in Loudéac the following year. Breeders sought a versatile helper able to search varied ground, point birds and retrieve after the shot.
Brittanys are usually lively, sociable and attentive to people. Calm contact can quickly become intense activity, especially around an interesting scent. They readily cooperate while also taking initiative during exploration.
