Bloodhound — size comparison — facts and sources

The Bloodhound is difficult to mistake for another dog: it has very long, soft ears, a broad nose and loose skin forming folds around the head and neck. Large, heavy and strongly built, it has a long body and a deep chest. It lowers its head towards the ground when tracking. Its apparently slow stride can be exceptionally persistent and purposeful.

Also known as the St Hubert Hound, its history is linked to scent hounds bred in the Ardennes and the abbey tradition there. Dogs of this type followed the scent of large game and later also searched for people. British breeding played an important role in establishing the modern Bloodhound. Accurate scent work remained its main working quality, rather than the speed of pursuit.

With people it is usually gentle and patient, seldom expressing mistrust abruptly. Once on a trail, however, it may persistently follow its own findings. A scent absorbs attention so completely that other stimuli become secondary.
