Western sandpiper — size comparison — facts and sources

The western sandpiper breeds mainly in western Alaska and adjoining Siberia. During breeding it uses tundra; on migration it visits coastal mudflats, estuaries and lagoons.

It takes food from the surface and probes shallow sediment layers with its bill. It eats small invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans and worms; at some feeding sites it also uses microorganism-rich biofilm.

Its nest is a shallow tundra depression hidden in low vegetation. Both parents incubate the eggs, and chicks quickly begin walking and feeding. On migration it feeds and rests in large gatherings, often with other small sandpipers.
